Winter Hot Air Balloon Flights Happening Now!

February 12th, 2010

Ohio Hot Air Balloon Rides are flown throughout the calendar year.  Whether you are considering a scenic flight for a group, or just a romantic getaway with that special someone, the team at Bella Balloons is anxious to serve you.

Winter hot air balloon flights are absolutely gorgeous, but occur infrequently due to weather conditions.  Beginning late November, wind speeds increase and ground conditions become wet.  Balloons must be packed away dry following flights, so additional planning and communication around ground conditions is crucial.  In the absence of dry conditions, the next best situation for winter flying is frozen ground.  Although temperatures below 32 F degrees are initially cold to some passengers, seeing snow-covered landscapes from a balloon basket is breathtaking!!!

Top 10 Bella Ballooning Memories of 2007-2008

April 15th, 2009

While flying over an Ohio band camp practice, hearing a director say, “Dammit, just put your instruments down and watch the balloon.  You guys obviously can’t concentrate!”

Landing a Hot Air Balloon into a field, then to be surrounded by grumpy bulls.  The farmer wasn’t grumpy, and convinced the obviously hungry bulls that the basket was not a new way to package hay.

Flying over nude sunbathers.  Is there anything better than watching them run?

Landing and deflating a Hot Air Balloon in the rear of a 500 acre, gated (and locked) cemetery.  Thankfully, the Middletown Ohio Police Department had a key,  smiles, and a quick response time!

Cruising by a newly built country home in a hot air balloon in Lebanon, OH, admiring the floor to ceiling glass windows one the second floor and noticing the completely naked man standing there admiring us.

Landing a Hot Air Balloon on a 30 x 30 ft stone island in the middle of an abandoned, flooded rock quarry to make a restroom stop.  The student pilot’s landing was artful, and after 2 tall coffees and 45 minutes of flying in 28 degrees, a thing of beauty.

While a group of firefighters were practicing rappelling, one managed to yell to the pilot and bet the approaching hot air balloon team that it couldn’t land its basket in the rear of his buddy’s pick-up truck…he was wrong.

Realizing that in-flight beverage service was not available, the pilot asked the crew chief to get a cup of hot coffee and stand in the park 1/2 mile ahead, holding the coffee above his head, only to hand directly to one of the passengers in the balloon flying by!

While traveling eastbound flying past a man cooking on his grill we asked if dinner was ready?  He said no, but he’ll cook more for us tomorrow if we “drop in”.  The next night, while traveling westbound we landed in the same man’s yard.  We turned down dinner…but it had to be fate!!

Flying near Wright-Patterson AFB, a passenger asked, “how close will that huge cargo plane come to us?”.  The picture says it all!

Surprise…A Hot Air Balloon Flight for You!!!

April 14th, 2009

The Bella Balloons pilots and crew had the pleasure of meeting several couples in the past few weeks.

Happy birthday to Milla who was celebrating her birthday. Anatoly pulled off the ultimate surprise by arranging all aspects of the balloon flight ahead of time, then driving Milla right to the launch site. Although Milla and Anatoly currently live in Cincinnati, OH, they are both from Russia and have only lived in the United States 1 year. They shared some interesting perspectives with the pilot, including, “Cincinnati and Dayton have great roads to chase the hot air balloons. It would be MUCH harder to chase in the Ukraine!!!” We believe him, and decided not to go to Russia to find out! J

We also helped Mary celebrate Bob’s birthday, and Andrew & Bianca’s celebrate their 1-year anniversary with hot air balloon rides.

For those of you who are “pranksters”, Peggy’s 50th birthday present, a Champagne flight with Bella Balloons was followed by some family trickery! Peggy’s husband, John, and about 15 family members met the hot air balloon flight team at our launch site in Springboro, OH, near Centerville, OH, south of Dayton, OH.

Once the balloon was in flight, we noticed that the family remained at the launch site for quite some time. When we returned after landing, we found Peggy’s SUV completely wrapped in shrink-wrap. After some cutting, the windows revealed many soap messages including, “50…AARP baby, over the hill”, and many other fun 50th birthday comments. Obviously, Peggy’s family was quite busy during the flight !!

Hopefully, some fantastic pictures will follow. Again, happy birthday and anniversary to all!

Do We Walk Back?!?!?

March 28th, 2009
One of the most common questions asked by passengers or those booking hot air balloon flights is, “How do we get back to the launch site?”.
Good question. We mention in the website that a typical hot air balloon rental flight travels between 6 and 12 miles, but in which direction?  Hot air balloons travel in the direction of the prevailing winds, which on any given day could be east, west, north or south.  That’s right-you CAN travel west in a hot air balloon.  In fact, you can launch a balloon from the same location on 7 consecutive days of the week and travel in 7 very different directions.  The prevailing winds are dictated by the position of high and low pressure systems, which move continuously.
The answer?  A hot air balloon rental not only includes a flight, champagne, souvenir glasses, certificates, etc but also includes transportation back to the launch site by our professional and courteous flight crew!
Once a launch site is determined, the pilot and crew team study both the projected flight path as forecasted from multiple weather sources, but also build their own projection by launching small latex pilot balloons at the launch site to confirm current wind direction/speed.  Based on the direction of the pilot balloon(s), the flight crew builds a theoretical flight path.
Following the launch, the crew chief travels in the chase vehicle and trailer underneath the balloon.  During the hot air balloon flight, the pilot and crew chief remain in contact via radios.  Towards the end of the flight, the crew coordinates the exact landing location.  Since Cincinnati and Dayton Hot Air Balloon Rides don’t include any mountainous terrain, radio transmissions are very reliable, but we also carry cell phones for back-up communications.
Upon landing, the crew team packs up the hot air balloon and transports everyone back to the launch site.  So, no walking or hitch hiking is required!!!

Anniversary & Birthday Bella Balloons Hot Air Balloon Flights in March

March 18th, 2009

Last week the Bella Balloons staff helped two couples celebrate different life events-a birthday and an anniversary.

Passengers Kim and Jeffrey of central Ohio came to Cincinnati to celebrate their 14th anniversary in style by taking a sunset hot air balloon flight in Miss Scarlet.  Congratulations  Kim and Jeff!

David, from north Dayton, was completely surprised by his wife, Amber, who gave him a sunset hot air balloon flight over gorgeous Warren County, Ohio.  David was celebrating his 30th birthday.  Amber carefully planned the entire weekend “away” with dinner, hotel room, and some sightseeing!  The hot air balloon ride was the grand finale.  Happy 30th Birthday David-many more to come…and please come back and see us soon.

Of course, both flights concluded with our traditional ballooning champagne toast!!!
